Hugs and Kisses for Special Olympics Scarf

Designed by Christina Burbage (Girlieknitwit)

Use Red Heart Cherry Red and Red Heart White Yarn. Size 10US needles.


Begin with first color and change colors at each pattern repeat or switch colors as you would like. Both colors should be used.

Scarf will be about 5” wide and 57” long after about 17 pattern repeats.


Cast On 26 stiches using your desired casting method


Row 1 : Knit across

Box Scarf

Square (make 11):

With white, ch 4, join in 1st ch to form a circle.

Rnd 1:  ch 3 (ch 3 counts as a dc), 2 dc in ring, *ch 2, 3 dc in ring, rep from * twice more. ch 2, join to beg ch 3.

Rnd 2:  ch 3, dc in next 2 dc, *(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch 2 space, dc in next 3 dc, rep from * twice more. (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch 2 space, join to ch 3. Cut white.

Rnd 3:  Join red with a slipstitch in any ch 2 space. ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same space, *dc in next 7 dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch 2 space, rep from * twice more.  dc in next 7 dc, join to ch 3.

Rnd 4:  Slipstitch to ch 2 space, ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same space, *dc in next 11 dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch 2 space, rep from * twice more. dc in next 11 dc, join to ch 3.

Finish off and weave in ends.

Make 11 squares and sew or crochet them together.  You can do whatever color combinations you want to come up with different looks.

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in front loop only of each st across.  Cut red.

Row 3: With right side facing and working in back loops only, join white with a slip stitch in the first sc, ch 4 (counts as first tr), tr in next 2 sc, *dc in next sc, hdc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc, hdc in next sc, dc in next sc, tr in next 3 sc, repeat from * across.

Granny Square (make 12)

With white, ch 5, join with a slipstitch to 1st ch to form a ring.

Rnd 1: ch 3, 2 dc in ring, (ch 2, 3 dc in ring) 3 times. Ch 2. Slipstitch in top of first ch 3.

Rnd 2: ch 4, *(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch 2 space. Ch 1. Rep from * 2 times. (3 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch 2 space. Slipstitch in 3rd ch of first ch 4, changing to white.

Rnd 3: Slipstitch into next ch 1 space, ch 3, work 2 dc in same space, ch 1, *(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch 2 space, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch 1 space, ch 1. Rep from * 2 times. (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch 2 space. Ch 1.

Row 1: Work 3 dc in 4th ch from hook.  *skip 3 ch and sc in 4th ch.  ch 3, work 3 dc in same stitch.  Rep from * to last 4 chains.  Skip 3 ch and sc in last ch.

Row 2: Ch 3, turn.  Work 3 dc in first sc. *slipstitch in next ch 3 space.  ch 3, and work 3 dc in the same space.  Rep from * across, working sc in top of last ch 3, changing to white in last sc.
